SUMMARY:Life Before Profits
DESCRIPTION:PURSUING THE RIGHT TO DIGNITY AND LIVELIHOOD BEFORE PROFITS  \nSEATINI Uganda and CEFROHT\, both Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working towards social and economic justice are pursuing the right to dignity and livelihood for workers in commercial land based investments in a campaign dubbed; ‘‘Life Before Profits.’’ \nFindings from a findings recently published by Southern and Eastern Africa Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI) Uganda and Urgent Action Fund reveals that workers\, especially women are adversely affected by the lack of appropriate personal protective gears which exposes them to chemicals which burn and irritate their skin and nose ; very low wages as low as 4\,400 Uganda shillings per day; very heavy work load involving carrying up to 1\,200 kilograms of load a day; lack of access paid maternity leave as a consequence of pregnancy and annual leave; high levels of labor casualization which exposes them to job insecurity; subjection to forced cohabitation; unfair dismissal from work\, among others. \nSEATINI Uganda and CEFROHT in partnership with Both ENDS are undertaking various activities aimed at pursuing the right to dignity and livelihood for workers in commercial investments; \nSEATINI together with CEFROHT filed a case on the 6th day of March\, 2020 and served the Attorney general with the pleading and a hearing notice\, the case will be coming up for hearing on the 29th day of June\, 2020 at 9:00 AM in the High Court of Uganda (Civil Division) at Kampala. \nAs SEATINI and CEFROHT await the ruling of the case by the High Court\, the two organizations have also set out to undertake various actions which will begin with media engagements starting on Monday 29th June 2020. \n
