DESCRIPTION:The World Trade organization’s (WTO) Thirteenth Ministerial Conference (MC13) will be held from 26 to 29 February 2024 in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates (UAE). \nThe WTO is a multilateral organization that deals with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements\, negotiated and signed by various of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. \nThe Ministerial Conference of the WTO meets every two years to make important decisions about existing trade agreements. The Ministerial Conference holds the authority to make decisions on any aspects of all multilateral agreements made under the WTO. \nGiven the importance of trade is as a driver of economic growth and development\, its is imperative that the voices of African countries and the Global South are heard in the multilateral trade negotiations. \nMC13 will build on the achievements of the previous Ministerial Conference (MC12). Thus\, the Thirteenth Ministerial Conference will address several pending issues. Among the issues and priorities which are on the table for discussion and negotiation are; Reform of the WTO including the dispute settlement system\, Fisheries Subsidies; advancing talks on agriculture; addressing climate change among others. However\, the biggest challenge facing the WTO is to deliver on the development agenda and address development related issues which have been on the agenda for a long time in order to maintain the belief and trust of developing countries in the WTO. \nRecognizing this\, it is paramount that Civil Society actors appreciate these issues to enable them to engage at the respective national\, regional and global levels. \nIn light of the above\, SEATINI Uganda and Third World Network Africa (TWN-A) under the auspices of the Africa Trade Network (ATN) are organizing a pre- WTO MC13 Civil Society Webinar on 8th February 2024 to gather and debate views on this important process. \nSpecific Objectives \n\nObtain an update on key negotiation issues and priorities ahead of MC13.\nDiscuss the recent challenges in the World Trade Organisation particularly the budding plurilateral trade arrangements and their implications on the Multilateral Trading System.\nDiscuss and develop a common civil society advocacy agenda for MC13.\n\nExpected outcomes \n\nCSOs increasingly scrutinize and appreciate the key negotiation priorities and issues at the MC 13 and beyond.\nRecommendations developed to address the challenges of the budding plurilateral trade arrangements at the WTO.\nStakeholder engagement and advocacy strategy for participation in the MC13 developed.\n\nDate: 8th January 2024 \nTime: 03:00 PM EAT \nRegister here: https://bit.ly/42uyorS

DESCRIPTION:Regional High-Level Dialogue on Advancing Local Vaccine Manufacturing and Access in Africa\nDate: 07th November 2023 \nOrganizers: Southern and Eastern Africa Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI) Uganda and Afya na Haki (Ahaki)\, among other partners. \nEvent Overview: SEATINI Uganda\, a Pan-African NGO dedicated to fostering equitable development through pro-development trade\, investment\, and fiscal policies\, in partnership with Ahaki and other consortium partners\, is convening a pivotal regional high-level dialogue. This event is a cornerstone of the ‘Advancing Regional Vaccine Manufacturing and Access in Africa (ARMA)’ project\, which aims to catalyze strategic advocacy and research to bolster regional vaccine production capabilities within Africa. \nContext: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical need for equitable and universal vaccine access\, highlighting Africa’s unsustainable reliance on external vaccine sources. With the continent producing less than 1% of its vaccine needs\, the dialogue seeks to address systemic disparities and foster self-reliance in vaccine manufacturing. This initiative aligns with the African Union’s ambitious goal of achieving 60% local vaccine production by 2040 through the Partnership for African Vaccine Manufacturing (PAVM). \nObjectives: The dialogue will focus on: \n\nExamining the impact of trade and related policies on local vaccine manufacturing and access.\nEncouraging regional collaboration in policy formulation and harmonization.\nEstablishing a multi-sectoral platform for stakeholders to discuss the current state of vaccine manufacturing and access.\nSharing new evidence to empower African institutions in achieving health sovereignty.\n\nExpected Outcomes: \n\nEstablishment of a coordinated platform for stakeholders to advance regional vaccine manufacturing.\nStrengthened multi-sectoral collaboration for policy advocacy.\nA campaign roadmap to promote regional vaccine manufacturing and access.\nEnhanced understanding among stakeholders of the evidence needed to strengthen African institutions in health sovereignty.\n\nParticipants: The dialogue will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders\, including Civil Society Organizations\, private sector representatives\, academia\, project partners from across Africa\, regional and national bodies such as Africa CDC\, relevant Ministries\, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)\, CSOs\, ARMA partners\, National Regional Authorities (NRAs)\, and media. \nThis high-level dialogue represents a concerted effort to address the urgent need for Africa to establish a self-sufficient vaccine manufacturing industry. DESCRIPTION:Geneva\, Switzerland – As part of the during the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum 2023\, the Southern and Eastern Africa Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI) and Third World Network (TWN) – Africa under the umbrella of Africa Trade Network (ATN) are set to hold a session themed; ‘‘Green Trade and Africa-Policy Perspectives’’. This session will be held on Friday\, 15th September 2023 from 12:30-13:45 in Room B\, WTO Building. \nThe Public Forum is the WTO’s largest outreach event\, providing a unique platform for interested stakeholders from around the world to discuss the latest developments in global trade and to propose ways of enhancing the multilateral trading system. The event attracts over 2\,000 representatives each year from civil society\, academia\, business\, government\, international organisations\, and the media. This year’s WTO Public Forum will examine how trade can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. The Forum will explore how trade can facilitate access to environmental goods\, services and technologies\, help achieving the Paris Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contributions\, and maintain the ambition to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. \nSession Context \nAfrican economies are confronted with an enduring challenge of structural economic transformation as most economies continue to exhibit features of primary commodity dependence. This challenge accounts for the low trade figures in value-added goods and services in the global economy. \nTo tackle these challenges\, the continent has put in place policy initiatives and frameworks such as the Agenda 2063\, a framework to guide policy choices on the continent. Other policy initiatives are Boosting Intra Africa Trade\, Accelerated Industrial Development in Africa\, Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) among others. \nBut Africa’s drive to raise productivity and change the trade narrative is taking place in a rapidly changing global trade policy landscape\, shaped by climate imperatives. SUMMARY:Life Before Profits
DESCRIPTION:PURSUING THE RIGHT TO DIGNITY AND LIVELIHOOD BEFORE PROFITS  \nSEATINI Uganda and CEFROHT\, both Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working towards social and economic justice are pursuing the right to dignity and livelihood for workers in commercial land based investments in a campaign dubbed; ‘‘Life Before Profits.’’ \nFindings from a findings recently published by Southern and Eastern Africa Trade Information and Negotiations Institute (SEATINI) Uganda and Urgent Action Fund reveals that workers\, especially women are adversely affected by the lack of appropriate personal protective gears which exposes them to chemicals which burn and irritate their skin and nose ; very low wages as low as 4\,400 Uganda shillings per day; very heavy work load involving carrying up to 1\,200 kilograms of load a day; lack of access paid maternity leave as a consequence of pregnancy and annual leave; high levels of labor casualization which exposes them to job insecurity; subjection to forced cohabitation; unfair dismissal from work\, among others. \nSEATINI Uganda and CEFROHT in partnership with Both ENDS are undertaking various activities aimed at pursuing the right to dignity and livelihood for workers in commercial investments; \nSEATINI together with CEFROHT filed a case on the 6th day of March\, 2020 and served the Attorney general with the pleading and a hearing notice\, the case will be coming up for hearing on the 29th day of June\, 2020 at 9:00 AM in the High Court of Uganda (Civil Division) at Kampala. \nAs SEATINI and CEFROHT await the ruling of the case by the High Court\, the two organizations have also set out to undertake various actions which will begin with media engagements starting on Monday 29th June 2020. \n
